Freski Cafe, Minsk
Freski is another cafe right in the center of Minsk that is always full of visitors and disappointments. A few years back, the place was swimming in warm orange light, the cosy atmosphere was relaxing. Many of the reviewers on relax.by (Freski reviews are mostly negative, and the positive ones seem to have been written by the same copywriter who likes exclamation marks, a lot!!!!!) say it has...

Vasilki Minsk, Nezavisimosti 16
Vasilki is the place to be, in terms of middle-of-the-road cafes. It looks like a peasant hut, a very very clean peasant hut made of plastic. It is always busy, especially on weekends. Long lines of people waiting to get in are customary – not a pleasant thing if you are sitting near the entrance. The waitress may offer you to share the table with other visitors, or nice visitors, like a polite...

Golden Coffee Club Minsk Cafe
Golden Coffee Club was abuzz with loud dance music and screaming people inside. Everyone stared at my kid, as if it was a three headed pink elephant with wings, and the second floor, which obscured the only table that wasn’t occupied was roasting with scents of hookah filler (no, it ain’t ‘prostitute’ spelt in a funny way)– apple, cinnamon, cherry.
The overworked waitress, who panted and carried...

Planeta Sushi, Nezavisimosti 18
When a square-foreheaded security guard the size of a double wardrobe didn’t let us into a place we always thought we would never be let in when we were hungry students, it wasn’t a good start for the night. Why we ended up in Planeta Sushi no one knows, we were planning to have a couple of speedy cocktails at a mysterious place with the unsmiling tin man at the entrance, or somewhere else fast...

Adios, Pizza Tempto!
Dear Pizza Tempto, Labanka 94, we’ve been visiting very often. You know my child. You hear her excited yelps as she walks up the stairs and screams for paper and crayons at the top of her voice. You have her pictures of blue mushrooms and green girls on the stand. What happened today is no less than a divorce.
We walked into a busy pizzeria and sat down at the last but one empty table. My...

Coyote, Minsk
Right at the entrance of Coyote we feel very ‘welcome’. The two girls who have that expression on their faces that is only relevant in the former Soviet Union (I am here to seal you fate, bitch) stare hard at my kid and tell me children under 18 are not allowed in. I haven’t expected this. I’ve had a difficult week. And I am here at 8 o’clock to hear a low-key intimate concert of Apple Tea...

Grunvald, Minsk
For a quiet dinner with a special friend we try to find Moya Anglisjskaya Babushka (and diss the ‘Englishness’ of it) but settled for the good old Grunvald instead. It is a wonderful place right in the centre of the city with a memorable knight propping the entrance hall wall, classic décor and simple but elegant food. We settle on the terrace which is full of elegant diners peacefully devouring...

Saquella Espresso Club, Minsk
Saquella Espresso Club looks great from the street. The red chairs gleam and the stand outside is alluring – espressos, Macchiatos and whipped cappuccinos (they are called frappé, stupid) beckon the visitor to come inside and relax for a minute or two.
But not all that glitters is … an Italian cafe. This small place in the centre of Minsk, which looks like it’s supposed to reek of freshly ground...

Russkie Sezony, Minsk
If you want to visit a Russian great house without going to Russia, then this restaurant is for you. The design of the place is stunning, at least for Minsk, the central chandelier is a little askew and one exquisite picture on the wall is hanging crookedly as if winking to the visitor - we had so much fun last night, M. had a little too much and N. had to shoot P. See the marks on the wall?...

oh so much fun →
My daughter had a nice doll, her first good doll, a doll for which I had to take quite a few shushing banknotes out of my battered red wallet, on which the clasp didn’t work and I had to carry around a pen to push it out every time I had to open it. But I carried a pen around all the time anyway, and a notebook, I was a writer after all, so it wasn’t a big deal…

Pizza Tempo, Minsk, Yakuba Kolasa 37
Pizza Tempo at Yakuba Kolasa 37 is packed with diners on a Sunday afternoon. We walk in and the busy waiters pretend they don’t see us (twenty minutes after that a foreigner and his three wives walked in, making the receptionist leap to her feet and flash her teeth, now where had I seen that before?) so we walk around the whole place and land on the only free seat in the whole cafe - a sofa...

Abrikos, Minsk
Abrikos is supposed to be a fun cheap place for students and young people even though a glass of wine (well, ok, a large glass of wine, 300 ml) will cost you as much as two or three glasses of a much better wine in a London club on a Saturday night.
The decor is … colorful.
The soup of the day looks home-food delicious, too bad I have no energy for rye bread and beetroot…

Pizza Tempo, Minsk, Labanka 94
Pizza Tempo is a good place if you are in a hurry, with a child or don’t have much to spend. You can grab a salad, a cappuccino or a pizza (if you don’t mind washing it down with lots of water for the rest of the day).
Pizza Tempo is very child friendly, with balloons, fun printouts and crayons on the menu, a colorful assortment of very affordable dishes like rice kasha for 2100...

Falcone, Minsk
Falcone is the best restaurant in Minsk. And not because it is the first one to have been included in the worldwide guide of the Italian restaurants recognized by the Italian Cooks’ Federation. And not because it has the best food. It’s the best because from the moment you reach the place, walk in the door, have your coat taken away, look around for a good seat, sink yourself into the (oh so...

Minsk Taxis
You’d think that when economies around the world are crumbling people providing you services that aren’t necessarily survival/subsistence ones (anti-cellulite chocolate wrap, anyone?), would want to please you, turn you into a regular customer and make you come back again and again? Think again. Here is the welcoming my child got when getting into a Minsk taxi: For God’s sake, mind your feet!...
